Today - 20.06.2021 - I started working on my Romanian literature project. The plan is to go through all the authors and texts that I studied for my final exams (the BAC) and write my own scholarly essays on them. Initially, this will be Romanian only. However, after I spoke to my uncle from America today on Skype, I’m starting to consider an English version as well.

I started with a fairytale called ‘The story of the White Gypsy’ (here, unfortunately, the gypsy also signifies a slave…). I read it when I was around 16, but I just read it, I didn’t actually pay attention to it. I wasn’t a ‘professional reader’ back then. So, coming back to it 4 years later I understood it so differently and I saw so many things I never noticed before - like the gypsy-slave connection, which is extremely f*cked up.

This will be an interesting project. I’m starting to define my outcomes, and one thing I know for sure I am going to do is to highlight all the issues while putting everything in context. For example: Yes, the connection I mentioned is scandalous, but at the time this was the mentality and the historical context; we can’t and shouldn’t change the past, but we need to understand it in context and learn from it through our modern lenses.
