Things I Would Have Liked to Know

I’ve been writing essays for about 8 years now in all sorts of contexts. I’ve read articles and textbooks about writing essays. They were useful, but I never felt they stuck to me.

Today a one-hour lecture and then a seminar changed my life (essay-writing life, I mean). I understood the DOs and DON’Ts of an essay. I understood the multitude of possible structures and I figured out which structure I naturally use. I understood what an essay should or shouldn’t have.

I can write whatever I want as long as it makes sense and now I know what makes sense and what doesn’t. I’m not some kind of essay master now, but at least I know what and how to improve. Of course, the direct feedback I got from my teachers helps a lot. I will write an article about the art of feedback, but not right now.

So, if anyone is struggling with an essay, let’s have a chat. I might be able to help.
